Denison ISD’s Pink Out takes aim at breast cancer

Hot pink socks, t-shirts and pink paisley bandanas added flair and meaning to the Denison Yellow Jackets’ standard-issue black and gold. The message, in Munson Stadium and on campuses across DISD, rang out loud and clear throughout October: prevent and find a cure for breast cancer.

“Breast cancer takes a daily toll on our mothers and grandmothers…daughters, sisters and friends,” said Ashley Glover, Denison High School cheer sponsor. “Rare is the person, young or old, who doesn’t know someone whose life has been upended and saddened by the suffering caused by breast cancer. Our goal at Denison High School is to increase awareness, to inspire our kids to get involved in the fight against breast cancer and other diseases, to teach them to always care and share…in hopes of helping others.”

Student Council sponsor Ashlyn Cowan and other DHS teachers and coaches helped kids organize fundraisers and awareness campaigns throughout the month of October, which is designated annually as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Cowan and the STUCO students sold ribbons that the football players carried on the field to honor those who are currently dealing with breast cancer, or those who have passed away from breast cancer. The proceeds of the ribbon sales, along with the Pink Out t-shirt sales all went to the Women Rock foundation.

“We had something going on virtually every day on our campus, to create awareness and get our kids involved,” said Cowan. “Our Munson Stadium Pink-Out is obviously our biggest event, allowing the community to join hands with our kids in support of the battle against breast cancer.
